9th July 2006 - Its the 9th of July, the World Cup finals were played today. The game was between France and Italy. It was hard to pick a favorite as both the teams were evenly matched. Italy won the World Cup final on penalties. Italy defeated France 5-3 on Sunday after a 1-1 draw through 120 minutes. The winning penalty of the match came from Fabio Grosso. The second spot kick by David Trezeguet did not materialize into a goal. This was the first penalty shootout in the final since the 1994 World Cup. For Italy, it was the fourth World Cup crown. The Italian team had lifted the crown in 1934, 1938 and 1982. The most strange incident was Zidane headbutting into the chest of Marco Materazzi. What a way to retire!! |
