Chinese Lantern Festival in Dallas

Dec 29th 2012 - In the Fall, my dad and I had seen the Chinese Lantern Festival at the Fair Park, as part of the Texas State Fair.  That was during the day and quite impressive so when we saw that the show was still on over the holiday break, we decided to come back again and see it at night with the lights. It was quite different and even more spectacular at night. There were many exhibits such as the

  • Panda Paradise
  • Peach Orchard
  • Lantern Lane
  • Faces of the Peking Opera
  • Chamber of the Fairies
  • The Porcelain Dragon
  • The World of Dinosaurs
  • The Statue of Liberty
  • Longhorn Cattle

The artful pieces that make up the Chinese Lantern Festival are a collection of lanterns made of silky cloth, glass, and porcelain. Construction of this exceptional exhibit originated in China, where a team of more than 100 artisans and technical staff did preliminary work in Sichuan, the cradle of Chinese lantern-making. Small completed pieces and raw materials were shipped by sea to the U.S., then to Dallas, where a team of more than 40 arrived from China to construct the majority of the exhibits on-site. Working long days in 100-plus degree heat, they succeeded in creating a showcase of the world's foremost lantern-makers.

It was very cold in the evening when we went to the show and by the time we left, we were all numb by the cold but yet managed to put on a smile. Hope you like the pictures. If you live in Dallas, go see it, the show finishes next Sunday on 6th January 2013.

Christmas 2012 Wishlist

Dec 24th 2012 - It's Christmas Eve and today we decided to call Santa and tell him what I want (a bit late isn't it?). My dad has Santa's phone number and we call him every year to get my gifts. I am not quite sure Santa exists and I think my parents go out and get the gifts for me. Last year, one of the gifts had a Costco sticker on it. Santa shops at Costco!!! So this year to test if Santa was real or not, I intentionally asked Santa for a gift that I had not told me parents about.

A month ago, I wrote down XBox, Diary of a Wimpy Kid Books and On the Border gift cards. Today I asked for "1000 Places to See before I die" calendar. If Santa is real, then the book will show up otherwise I know Santa is not real.

Come back tomorrow to see what happened. I think I am going to be riiiggght!!!

Would you be my Flat Stanley Buddy?

December 14th, 2012 - Hi everyone. My name is Nikhil, I am 6 years old and live in Dallas in the United States. My parents recently got me a book about this young boy called "Flat Stanley". Flat Stanley was a normal boy just like me but one day, a board fell on him and he became flat. Yes, flat as a pancake (ooh, I love pancakes and syrup). While life has been difficult for Stanley since turning flat, its also been very adventurous too. Because he is flat, he can fold and mailing himself to any part of the world. Stanley has been to China, Japan, Egypt, Canada, Mexico and even to the White House. I have never been to any of these places except the White House. Sometimes, I wish I could be Flat Stanley.

In my Flat Stanley book collection there was a little cut out of Stanley that I can mail to other kids around the world and have Stanley travel to other countries. So here is my idea and I hope you would like to join me in helping Stanley travel the world. Here is how it will work.

  1. If you are interested, have your parents contact my dad via the Contact me form.
  2. We will ask for your mailing address and send you Flat Stanley and also something from my country. It may be something informational about a monument in my country or maybe a currency note.
  3. Once you get him, you can keep the gift I sent to you, sign Flat Stanley with your name and the country you live in and mail him back. If you like, you can send me something small from your country too.

Its that simple. Through this adventure, I will get to know about the world, make some friends and hopefully someday I may actually meet you.
